Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to question particular rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
