Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
