Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People using these medications must be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
