An defense official has stated that the MoD is currently examining the possible threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, while staff have been advised to avoid discussing secret matters in all cars.
Security Guidance for MoD Staff
During a recent appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss classified information while riding in China-made vehicles.
The minister stated that the ministry is “looking into” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that security is a concern in every contemporary cars.
Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
However whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any kind of car, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”
Wider Defence Background
The revelation follows claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to disable buses and bring chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing lasers at RAF aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.
The wider security environment highlights the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in all areas of government activities, from transport usage to communication practices.
